Managing a team is a challenge for anyone! Not only do you and your team need to be effective in the organisation but, as a manager, you also need to be sensitive to the development of staff members. The two do not always coincide! This training activity involves participants in a group exercise that can be managed in any number of ways by the team manager.

You explain that the purpose of this training activity is to explore the issue of team management. You ask the group to select a team manager and brief them on their task, which is to fill in a blank on a map. Once they have completed the exercise, you encourage the participants to explore their experience of the exercise – how it was managed and how closely this resembles their working experiences. They then move through a series of stages to examine the skills and qualities required by a team manager.
