The main purpose of the activity is to communicate to everyone inside or around a team just where they should be focusing their energy or attention. This activity determines what a future state will look and feel like, how to get to the final destination, the discrete and sometimes detailed tasks called actions, and the various paths dealing with people, processes and communications involved in introducing a competency-based project.

The activity begins with an explanation to the participants for the complex problems involved in developing an action plan, and about a technique for organising and focusing on the plan using milestones, actions and project paths to reach the goal of journey's end. The participants work through all the stages of this technique to develop an action plan through a worked example based on buying a house. They look at how the action plan can be 'fixed' and made ready for exposure to others outside the team and for implementation. The activity closes with a review of the key learning points, and encouragement to the participants to use this approach to action planning in other areas of their work.
