Giving and receiving feedback are central to managing performance (as a manager) and to improving performance by the individual. They are often taken as read, and yet the giving and receiving of feedback is a skill rarely taught. Competencies can go a long way to easing the process of giving and receiving feedback, and this activity is designed to review good practice in giving and receiving feedback and in using the generic competency framework supplied with this activity.

The activity begins with the participants considering key questions about feedback and recording their responses on sheets of flipchart paper. They then examine the Onion Model as an aid to giving and receiving feedback. The participants use the competency framework (with this activity) to plan and practise giving and receiving feedback all together and in groups using different scenarios. The activity closes with final comments from the participants about the giving and receiving of feedback based on the competency framework.
