Once we have collected information to help investigations and problem solving, we then need to make sense of it in the context of where we will be using it. Separating fact from opinion, intuitive response from logical deductions and deciding what is relevant, all take time and effort, but have to happen before fair disciplinary action can be taken. Disciplinary meetings and actions have to be recorded in a way that is accurate, relevant and sufficient to meet any future use for these records.
A visual exercise where participants work in small groups to complete ‘jigsaw puzzles’ introduces the training activity and helps participants think about some of the problems involved in making sense of information. Different groupings then use true and false storytelling to explore their current use of logical deduction and intuitive reactions. Case notes are used to help participants recognise and differentiate facts from opinions and this is followed by pairs work to develop good practice in recording disciplinary cases. The training activity end with participants completing a learning log on changes they need to make to their current practice.
