One aspect of dealing with the poor performer that managers often neglect is that of making written reports about the interviews they have held, the targets set and the actions taken. It is not surprising because they already have plenty to do making sure their own objectives and targets are met without concerning themselves with what many managers consider to be the domain of the HR specialist. So, this training activity gives you, the trainer, the indirect means to give poor performers a helping hand. By doing so, you will make life easier for them and they will thank you for it.
The training activity opens with a brief discussion about the two aspects of managing poor performance – the poor performance itself and the procedures by which it is managed. The participants focus first on the importance of those procedural factors and contribute to identifying them. They then consider some meeting guidelines for structuring an interview with a poor performer and two documents for planning and summarising the discussion. The participants then form groups to discuss a case study and prepare a discussion planner in anticipation of an interview with the poor performer. A plenary discussion about the group work leads into the acting out of a selected plan by two volunteers. The participants reform into their previous groups to complete the discussion summary document, followed by a short debriefing. To close the training activity, the participants summarise themselves by providing what they feel are the most important points to remember about conducting an interview with a poor performer.
