Where only certainty is uncertainty, the creation and use of knowledge is the main source of lasting competitive advantage. The effective creation and use of knowledge doesn’t just happen by employing clever and creative people. Knowledge, like any other resource, needs to be managed. This does not mean we have to create bureaucratic procedures to control and disseminate knowledge. That will only stifle creativity, sharing and collaborative effort – the very essence of a knowledge-creating culture. We need to think deeply and clearly about the kind of culture we want. This means being knowledge inclusive – capturing and rewarding the knowledge potential of everyone. This training activity aims to increase the participants’ awareness of their organisations knowledge capability.

You begin this training activity by asking the group how confident they are in their knowledge about their organisation’s creation and use of knowledge. You then conduct an exercise in which the group is asked to imagine the successful organisation of the future and to brainstorm how that organisation would manage its creation and use of knowledge. Individually, participants complete a questionnaire to define the gap between where their organisation is now and where it needs to be. Then, in groups they share their views, and reach a consensus about the three areas where change is needed, and which will have the most impact on the organisation’s future success. Each group goes on to conduct a domain-mapping exercise to define the action strategies for getting from where they are to where they need to be. The training activity is rounded off with a learning review to share tacit learning.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to increase participants’ awareness of their organisation’s knowledge capability, engaging them in a process of defining the action strategies necessary to help their organisation gain an edge in the market-place.
