There are different types of teams in any organisation and the leader's role in promoting the climate and the opportunities for team learning and development will vary with the different types of team. This activity provides an opportunity for participants to explore their leadership role in different types of team.

The activity starts off with a quick, lively exercise to promote awareness of the key characteristics of different types of teams. This is followed by another lively exercise, where people work in small groups to list, on flipchart sheets which are circulated round the groups, issues in promoting team learning and development for team leaders in different types of teams. Next, small groups identify and note how to manage the priority issues and present their ideas to the whole group. The activity closes with the completion of a learning log and consideration of how to use the materials in the workplace.

Purpose: This training activity is intended for use by trainers with team leaders to help them identify their role in promoting team learning and development in different team types. Use this activity as part of your Developing Teams: The Leader's Role programme. You can also use it as part of any programme on Leading a Team, Managing for the First Time, Personal Development, Processes and Techniques for Planning, Team Communications, or Team Development. The activity involves quite a lot of physical movement so you could use it to energise your group after lunch, or at the end of the day.
