In any team there is a need to be able to listen effectively in order to absorb information, to fully participate in meetings, and build constructively on other’s ideas, among other reasons. This training activity has an exercise to help participants to assess how good or bad they are at listening. There are no tricks, except that some information is simply not given. The back-up notes on effective listening and the follow-on exercise help to build the skills of listening.

The participants undertake the ‘Post office robbery’ exercise, with minimal introduction. This is followed by a guided discussion to draw out key points about ‘active’ listening and how to overcome barriers to effective listening. This can be followed by a second exercise, listening trios, to consolidate learning and give the participants additional practice.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants recognise the shortcomings in their own listening, and to use an exercise to improve listening skills

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers at an early stage in a team-building programme to increase the effectiveness of listening so that team members will be able to gain more from later activities such as discussions, consensus exercises and any group problem-solving or information-sharing exercises. Alternatively, it can be used in isolation where participants need to recognise their strengths and weaknesses in the area of listening. A second (optional) exercise, listening trios, is for giving participants further practice in listening or improving listening skill.
