Facing someone with the fact that their performance falls short of what is required can be daunting for a manager – particularly the young, new manager who may be dealing with, for example, tough factory workers who might bluster and threaten. To the young and inexperienced manager, behaviour that is not actually ‘aggressive’ could be interpreted as such, provoking reactions which are less than helpful and may even turn a situation to violence. Part of the problem is that we often see strongly assertive behaviour as aggressive, and sometimes we fail to define some types of passive behaviour as aggressive. None of us likes dealing with people we see as aggressive for one simple reason, let’s admit it, we’re afraid of them! But there are a few simple rules and processes for dealing with them without having to play the amateur psychologist. One of the difficulties about dealing with aggressive people is that we do not get much practice, so this training activity provides the participants with a number of exercises that allow them to practice with one another.

From the outset participants understand that the training activity is not so much about the violently aggressive person as about the different types of aggression a manager is likely to meet. The participants look at the causes of aggressive behaviour and at effective and ineffective ways of handling it. They then practice with one another the techniques of mirroring body language and labelling feelings. The participants examine a model of conflict, expressed in terms of dominance and caring, and use it to identify ways of handling the different types of people in the sectors of the model. A final summary emphasises the need for managers to identify the causes of aggressive behaviour, to deal differently with different types of aggression and to vary the style with which they handle it.
