This training activity will enable participants to create a more effective team through managing change.

You start the training activity by leading a discussion which establishes that managing change has a central part to play in the role of the manager. You conclude the discussion by showing a three-stage model for managing change in organisations. You now work through the first of the three stages of managing change. This will involve the participants in two short small-group exercises designed to help them analyse their current position by producing both a PEST and a SWOT analysis of their department or organisation. Having reviewed the outcome of the exercises, you move on to looking to the future. You discuss the difficulties of identifying a vision statement, and introduce seven characteristics that should apply to any future objectives. In small groups, the participants develop the skills of writing aims for the future. Next, you look at how managers can work towards those aims and introduce a technique called ‘Force Field Analysis’, which can be used to identify potential resistance. The participants practise the technique in small groups. Having reviewed their resistance factors you introduce six strategies that can be used to overcome them. Following a discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy, the participants return to their small groups and decide which combination to use to overcome the resistance identified earlier. You finish the managing change training activity by encouraging the participants to examine what role they can play in introducing the change. They work in pairs to produce ideas of the general behaviour a team leader should and should not display during considerable organisational change. After reviewing all their ideas you encourage participants to write their own personal action plan for applying the ideas for managing change on their return to the workplace.
