Difficulties can often arise when we are investigating problems. The sheer volume of information available can mean that we find it hard to decide what to accept and what to reject. A totally open mind can mean we are swamped with information; a closed mind will mean we don’t see what is under our noses. We are often affected by our own perceptions and bias and sometimes only see what we want to see. We make the facts fit what we want to happen. This training activity explores some of these issues and their relevance to managing discipline.
A fun exercise shows participants how information can become distorted as it is passed on. Participants then work in pairs to consider how assumptions can affect their information collecting and how they can avoid making wrong assumptions. They complete an individual learning log to suggest changes in their behaviour. Small groups discuss a range of controversial statements and consider whether they agree with the statements. The full group reflect on what happened and what they can do to help find the truth in discipline cases in the future. The training activity ends with participants milling round the room and holding conversations about their learning before completing a second learning log.
