Performance review systems typically set targets, support endeavours towards meeting them and deliver a reward for success. Very often that reward is monetary, perhaps in the form of a bonus, a pay increment or share option. Although it may be true that in the first instance people ‘work to live’, they also frequently seek other benefits from their employment. Some even become so involved that their priorities become revered and they ‘live to work’. A performance review procedure that goes some way in helping people meet their personal aims, within the context of business targets, could produce better results.

The training activity begins by introducing the participants to the idea that people’s needs at work are not always met in monetary form. Many needs can be met in the workplace at little or no cost. In groups, the participants first consider what people may hope to get from their employment other than an economic return. In the same groups, they next think about what employers may want from workers, the other side of the bargain. The participants then look at some of the formal and informal benefits from work. Working again in groups, they assign these benefits in a way that matches needs and rewards. The discussion that follows shows the participants that there is no single solution to matching rewards with needs. They are given one possible solution and see that their own choices will not necessarily coincide. The training activity concludes with a review and summary of the key learning points.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to get participants to consider, at length, an often neglected aspect of performance appraisal, ‘What do the appraisees get out of it?’ Group-work feedback is used for general analysis.
