Before an organisation or department can begin to network successfully, they need to know why they are doing it. Networking should be put in the context of an organisation’s mission statement and seen as an essential and integrated part of developing the business. This training activity examines how networking fits into the organisation’s overall strategy. It creates an awareness of the value of networking and provides an action plan on which to build.
The training activity opens with the participants completing a questionnaire on the relevance of networking, which gauges their opinions of the value of networking. The participants then say what they know of the organisation’s mission statement. Working individually and in groups, they agree the wording and meaning of the organisation’s mission statement. Next, they discuss, in small groups, how their department contributes to the overall plan, and present their findings to the other participants. They then formulate a departmental mission statement, focusing on how their department contributes to the organisation’s vision. In small groups, the participants debate the benefit of networking as part of the overall strategy, before returning to report their findings. Finally, they revisit the questionnaire on the relevance of networking and assess how their views have changed since the beginning of the exercise.
