Conflicts often result from a fundamental lack of understanding between people. How often have you had a real sense that the other person is just not on the same wavelength as you? Putting yourself in the other person’s shoes, the ability to understand other people’s point of view and demonstrate this understanding, is invaluable in minimising conflict.
Following a brief introduction to the purpose of the training activity, the participants define empathy and move on to an exercise to practise demonstrating empathy. Next, the participants identify interventions that help demonstrate empathy and those that hinder. The participants then discuss how they can effectively demonstrate empathy, followed by a further practice opportunity. You close the training activity by reminding them that they can practise this skill in all walks of their lives, and that they should notice an impact on their personal and professional relationships.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to explore and clarify empathy, the ability to put yourself in the other person’s shoes, and provide exercises for the participants to practise demonstrating empathy, with the aim of reducing the likelihood of one-to-one conflicts.
