The personal motives of individual managers vary – the more individuals are aware of their motives, the more they will be able to remain effective in managing performance. Most managers have a preferred management style or styles; in many cases this is used instinctively rather than consciously. In some cases, the preferred style may not be the most effective one for the circumstances. This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to examine their personal motives and preferred style(s) in managing staff, and to consider what changes may be necessary to optimise their performance management skills.

You start the training activity by introducing the purpose, and follow on with the participants identifying and then considering their personal motives for managing staff performance. Next, you introduce a range of management styles and participants complete a brief worksheet to assess the extent to which they use the optimum style(s) in given situations. Participants then move on, in pairs, to consider the extent of any links between their motives and their management style(s) and what, if any, changes, they want to make.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants consider personal motives and preferred style(s), and to develop self-awareness and personal effectiveness for performance management.
