Presenting to audiences whose first language is not English and/or from a different culture can be a very positive experience, providing the presenter has fully prepared and thought through likely issues in advance. Differences can include business and social etiquette, customs, language, equipment standards, and so on. This training activity is best used with those who have already worked, or who are about to work, with audiences from other cultures. This could, of course, include audiences from the UK.
This training activity begins with the participants considering likely challenges that might arise when presenting to multicultural audiences. They play a communication game to examine the use of gesture and visuals in conveying a message. This is followed by an exercise that requires participants to identify and manage different cultural norms. In a second communication game, they look at the importance of the word clarity by studying UK business and social idioms from the viewpoint of different cultures. In the final exercise, the participants suggest strategies and solutions gained from their experiences during the exercises and games. As the training activity closes, you ask the participants to take with them a detailed handout to remind them of the key points of the activity.
