Many one-to-one situations have the potential to escalate. The behaviour of either or both parties may provoke this escalation. This training activity provides an opportunity for the participants to consider which actions or behaviours may be provocative and thus which behaviours to avoid.
You briefly introduce the purpose of this training activity. The participants work individually, and then in small groups, to identify behaviours in others that have led to them, the participants, feeling angry or starting to lose their temper. From this work, they identify behaviours to avoid. The training activity ends with a summary of the learning which leads in to further activities in your programme.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to enable participants to identify triggers – behaviours which may provoke difficult or aggressive responses, and from this move on to identify behaviours to avoid.

Purpose: This training activity, intended for use by trainers, can be used early in a programme on dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour, to enable the participants to think through their role in contributing to this sort of behaviour in others. Follow up with ‘Tactics for defusing difficult situations’, to give the participants an opportunity of considering how to defuse difficult situations. Use ‘Non-verbal behaviour’ and ‘Exploring and managing blocks to dealing with difficult and aggressive behaviour’, to provide opportunities to develop ways of changing their behaviour. This activity can also be used in programmes on coping with conflict, or dealing with violence.
