As the principles of supervision, appraisal and competencies become increasingly embedded in organisations, 360 degree feedback, in which the manager actively seeks feedback about a staff member from the staff member, from other staff members, peers and customers, has also been introduced by many organisations. The staff member can also be proactive in seeking feedback from these people, their manager and from direct reports. But if feedback itself remains a sensitive area for staff members, the notion of 360 degree feedback is more sensitive still. This training activity, therefore, seeks to explore the benefits of 360 degree feedback and the way in which a competency framework can help this process.

The training activity begins with a short exercise on first impressions to introduce the concept of 360 degree feedback. This exercise is referred to later in the training activity. The participants then explore the benefits of and barriers to 360 degree feedback in discussion groups and examine the Johari Window model in relationship to such 360 degree feedback, particularly the benefits of seeing ourselves as others see us. They also review the first impressions exercise (concepts of 360 degree feedback) in the light of the model. The participants then undertake a 360-degree feedback training exercise through a case study, using the generic competency framework supplied, and practise giving feedback from a variety of perspectives. In a final training exercise, the participants consider how 360degree feedback using competencies can benefit the individual, the team and the organisation. The training activity closes with a plenary discussion on how an organisation can introduce 360 degree feedback using competencies.
