One of the elements which is bound to form part of a first leadership role is planning. Although this is an everyday task for almost everyone, it can feel very challenging if it suddenly becomes a part of the working role. Most new leaders will welcome a few simple tools to help with the planning process – ideally combined with some confidence building to reassure them that they can carry out this function competently.
You start the activity by introducing the essential rules and processes of planning, rounding off with the planner’s alphabet. You then introduce the group to a variety of simple planning tools, giving examples of their application wherever possible. Finally, the participants carry out a planning exercise, working individually and then in small groups, based on a current personal work issue.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers with their participants to provide simple planning tools, to clarify the various processes involved in planning, and provide an immediate application of the tools to a real problem/issue.

Purpose: As well as providing the tools, this training activity is designed to give a very strong message about the effective use of time in planning, and provide a practical approach to time-effective planning. It clearly links with ‘Moving towards decisions’, which is an extended look at another analytical tool but also provides an object lesson in the straightforward approach recommended here. There is also a very strong link with time management as covered in ‘Managing yourself’ and ‘Managing time’.
