Absence is one of the most common disciplinary offences. It is also one that many managers ignore until it reaches crisis point. There is almost always a ‘story’ behind absence and these stories have to be investigated. Such investigations are a key part of managing any disciplinary case. It is essential that they are carried out with diligence and care if costly tribunals are to be avoided.
The training activity starts with pairs taking a short stroll and holding a conversation about their experiences and knowledge of absence cases. These are used to help participants recognise the range of reasons for absence and the importance of investigations. Small groups then work together on two case studies that are about absence and appeals and they involve the groups using investigation skills and role-plays. Groups give each other feedback on their skills before the full group discuss the outcomes of the case studies. Pairs then consider what further action might be needed as a result of the disciplinary case. The training activity closes with participants completing a learning log.
