From time to time, the use of alcohol and/or drugs intrudes into many workplaces. What behaviour is acceptable? To what extent dose the organisational culture condone/permit/prohibit the use of some/any alcohol? Does the same apply to recreational drugs? What are the issues for a manager faced with staff who are under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs? Which strategies can be adopted to manage the situation? If the situation warrants, how do you conduct a disciplinary meeting? This training activity provides an opportunity for participants to consider how to manage a range of drug/alcohol issues and moves on to provide an opportunity to practise decision making in the context of a disciplinary meeting.
Following a brief introduction, participants work in groups of three on a range of scenarios about drugs and alcohol at work, to identify short- and medium-term strategies for managing the situations. When the feedback session is completed, participants move on to consider a case study – Pull yourself together. The subject of the study has been abusing alcohol, coming to work with hangovers, and returning from lunch not sober. Participants work in groups and, playing different roles, hold a disciplinary meeting. The panel decide on the outcome. Learning is consolidated during a small-group review and through use of learning logs completed during earlier activities.
