Some people feel able to carry straight on after they have been on the receiving end of an incident; others immediately recognise that they need support and/or a break. Our reaction depends on a range of factors, including our personality, how ‘strong’ we feel at the time, what else is going on in our lives, our experience of the incident, the organisational culture, and the implications of being seen to need support. This training activity provides an opportunity for the participants to consider the different emotional responses after an incident and to develop a process to debrief someone following an incident.

Once you have briefly introduced the purpose of the training activity, the participants list the emotions that they have experienced after an incident, in a snowball exercise (individually, pairs, fours) and then view the emotions experienced to acknowledge the range and variety. Next, the participants consider their needs for debriefing and plan a process to use by developing an outline incident form. The training activity concludes with an opportunity for the participants to reflect on how, when and with whom, they would want to debrief.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to encourage participants to consider the needs of the person on the receiving end of an incident and how best to meet those needs after it has occurred. They plan for debriefing, including how, when
