Some issues are too complex to be explored with simple coaching techniques. In such circumstances, a more sophisticated approach should be employed as part of the coaching process. This training activity deals with two of the most useful and simple techniques to exploit: Force Field Analysis and fish-bone diagrams. The techniques are simple to learn but powerful in their application. The training activity generates a lot of positive feeling, and because the participants work on real-world issues, they find it valuable learning. The training activity assumes they will work in groups on the same issue. However, with a little additional thought you will be able to lead this training activity with participants working on a large number of different issues.
You introduce the need to analyse complex issues with techniques that are more sophisticated than basic coaching skills. You present the first technique – Force field Analysis – and the participants work in small groups to apply the technique to an agreed issue. They then share their ideas in a brief feedback session. Next, you demonstrate the second technique – the fish-bone diagram. You agree the rules for using this technique, and they then work in groups to analyse their second work-related issue. Each group then makes a short presentation of their results. Finally, you lead a brief review of the value of the two techniques as additional coaching skills.
