Performance review systems provide an opportunity to pull together formally and summarise achievements and to agree and plan action for the future. The agreement of objectives and targets, appraisal of individual performance and personal development needs must be connected. Development issues, such as identifying training needs for improvement, training needs for change of career moves, should all be covered. Education and training should be available to all employees. Education, training and development are key to business success and all employees, therefore, need access to achieve their full potential.
The training activity begins with an introductory exercise asking the participants to form groups and think about possible development outcomes of a discussion of development requirements in a performance review appraisal meeting. Information on a wide range of possible outcomes is given to add to their own suggestions. Working in pairs, the participants then consider the meaning of key terms used to explain development possibilities. They make their own interpretation of four key terms and compare them with given definitions in the context. A mini case-study exercise follows in which participants, working in groups, develop convincing arguments for the need to attend an external training course on employment law, in particular, grievance and discipline procedures, and age and sexual orientation. The training activity ends with a brief review of the key learning points.
