The preparation, appraisal interview and the follow-up work need to be a continuous loop. The danger is that the completion of the appraisal document is seen as the end of the process, instead of the launch of the next stage. Careful analysis and diary- or project-planning of the action points and objectives should take place as soon as possible after the appraisal interview. This allows the appraisee to clarify their thoughts while everything is fresh in their mind and to refer back to the appraiser while they too can remember the interview. This training activity gives participants the opportunity to work on practical exercises to determine how to follow through, and appropriate timescales for doing so.
You begin the training activity by emphasising the importance of seeing the whole appraisal process as a continuous loop, with the interview follow-through stage as an extremely important element of that loop. The participants contribute ideas and work individually on supplied or live material as you guide them through the key stages of the follow-through session. First, the participants summarise the action points and objectives from the appraisal interview, checking for SMART s they work. They then decide when they would need to approach the appraiser for clarification and the most effective ways of doing this. The participants move on to diary-plan their action points and objectives for the coming year, making a distinction between those items that can be tackled immediately and those that require a full project planning exercise. You take one or two key learning points from each person before distributing and commenting on a key learning points handout where appropriate.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to ensure participants know how to make what is agreed and planned actually happen by focusing on the importance of the appraisee following through on what happens during the appraisal interview.

Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants who will be appraised on their performance at formal appraisal interviews. Ideally this training activity would take place within a few days of the formal appraisal interview, allowing participants to work on their own live material. In practice, however, this is often difficult and running this training activity just prior to the appraisal interviews is useful as participants can then use what they learn immediately following the appraisal interview. Another very effective application is for this training activity to be delivered on a 1:1 basis shortly after the appraisal interview, using live material. It is a good idea to run your appraisers through this training activity to keep them fully up to date with the messages the appraisees will be receiving. Participants will ideally have covered, ‘Appraisee preparation’ and ‘Making the most of your appraisal interview’, before working on this training activity.
