The actual appraisal interview should not hold any major surprises for the appraiser of the appraisee. It should be a review of what has happened during the appraisal period and an opportunity to put plans for the future in place. The appraisee has a responsibility to prepare fully for the interview in order to play an active role in it. This training activity demonstrates how preparation comes together to contribute to a successful appraisal interview. There may be times, however, when differences in perception or problems in communication are brought to light during an appraisal interview. Participants are also given the opportunity to role-play and discuss these more difficult appraisal situations.

You open the training activity by emphasising the importance of full preparation in advance of the appraisal interview, and recap on the key points of preparation, asking the participants to expand on the information supplied. The focus then shifts to the key issues to be considered during the interview, again asking the participants to think through each point. You select and run one or more role plays, covering a number of situations that may arise during straightforward and more difficult appraisal interviews. After each role-play interview you facilitate feedback.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with participants to explore the topics of what to expect, supporting materials, potential benefits, and having the confidence to be an active participant, using a range of role play situations.
