Appraisal lends itself to a variety of applications. Probably its core use for most is as a method of formalising a two-way dialogue between manager and subordinate, about job needs and progress to date. A further extension is to use it as part of a performance management system, where work standards and competencies achieved result in variations in employee reward. Performance-related or merit pay is practised widely in the UK, and many people subscribe to the view that reward should reflect personal achievement. In essence, operating a performance-related pay system implies establishing performance objectives, subsequently reviewing the performance achieved and then assigning some variation in reward according to a method made known at the outset.
The training activity begins with an introduction to the operational elements of performance pay systems. Participants will subsequently work their way through these, step by step, within the context of a case study. Participants work in pairs to formulate some work and personal competency targets in the first of three exercises of a case study. In the next case study exercise, they develop some performance measures and standards. The participants conclude the series of exercises by allocating rewards on the basis of individual performance. They are shown one possible proposal and the rationale behind it. The training activity closes with a review and summary of the key learning points.
