It is vital in any performance review that effective communication takes place. Face-to-face communication has specific needs. The sharing of information, attitudes and feelings is done by words, tones and behaviour. This gives the opportunity for feedback, which has enormous value.
The participants discuss with a partner what they think communication is and are given a definition of communication and shown a model of the communication process. They go on to answer some questions about a communication problem designed to analyse the situation, its cause and how it could be avoided. This leads into an examination of three main areas where barriers to communication may occur. The participants next look into the listening aspect of communication, think about how to listen well and receive some useful tips for effective listening. They then explore the importance of body language in performance review. By completing a questionnaire, they test their own body language and discuss their responses with a partner. Following this, the participants consider the effects of body language in the interview situation. In a final exercise, the participants reflect on how communication at an appraisal or performance review interview can be most effective. The training activity closes with a brief review to establish the key learning points.
