Investors in People is a national standard based upon the realisation that business success is achieved through people. The focus is on linking people management activities, including training, to business objectives so that one impacts positively on the other. Both training and development are seen as an essential part of any organisation; they make a substantial contribution to the success of any business, and hence all employees, regardless of their position, need to be included in training and development programmes. The aim is to improve the performance of the whole workforce. This is not a negative view but a belief in continuous improvement towards a common vision. The Investors in People status for an organisation means that employees are encouraged to identify their own training needs and share responsibility with the employer for their own development. Appraisal is therefore extremely important. An appraisal performance review scheme is a means by which individual performance and development needs can be discussed, agreed and implemented for the benefit of both the individual and the business.
As an introduction to the training activity, the participants are asked how much they know about Investors in People, and are given the official explanation of the Investors in People scheme. Participants are then reminded of the importance of appraisal in an organisation. The participants work in groups on a case-study exercise identifying the main problems in a company. In the same groups, they then consider in general terms how commitment to Investors in People would have helped the company. The training activity closes with a review and summary of key points.
