A good performance review system will be a two-way process where the needs of both the organisation and the workforce will be matched for mutual advantage. Fulfilled employees are likely to be more effective than dissatisfied employees. This training activity will show that a good performance review system also recognises that if people are diverse, so too are their needs from the organisation. Service levels and profitability targets can still be met without total uniformity of outlook and behaviour. None of this need in any way interfere with the basic structure of the appraisal process. It is just a matter of being sensitive in its application.
You begin this training activity by defining the performance review/appraisal as a two way process of communication. The participants then examine what an employer’s needs are with respect to employees, and rank what makes a job attractive to an employee, in order of priority. Then you ask the participants to conduct an appraisal interview to develop views on accommodating people’s diverse approaches to fulfilling their work contract. You lead a final discussion to consider the need for change within the participants’ own organisation(s), applying the learning from this training activity.
