Purpose: This training resource is intended for use by trainers with managers who conduct appraisal interviews, or who will be doing so in the future. The exercise will stand alone for practised managers studying assertive communication, or can complement general training on the subject of appraisal interviewing, for those who already have some knowledge of assertive communication. All participants should have completed, ‘Rights in assertiveness’, and must have taken part in, ‘Behaviour styles’, or have undergone basic assertiveness training, to provide them with the background information and understanding to support this activity.
