Even the best managers sometimes find certain individuals difficult to deal with. Insubordination can quickly develop when personalities clash. Taking action early, by using assertive management skills, can avoid disciplinary action which can be costly in both time and resources for the organisation, and personally for the manager and other staff.
A light-hearted introduction using bingo cards helps participants feel positive about themselves and builds trust. Assertiveness skills are then identified and described before participants work in pairs and fours to develop ‘mini-dramas’ to demonstrate how cases of insubordination were managed. Music can be used during part of this exercise. Pairs give each other feedback on their use of assertiveness skills before individuals complete a learning log of their current skills. Participants then return to their original insubordination case and plan how to manage the incident more assertively so that, in the future, minor misconduct is tackled early and disciplinary action avoided. The training activity ends with participants completing a second learning log.
Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants use their own experiences to develop ‘mini-dramas’ for practising assertiveness and plan how to manage more assertively in the future and tackle minor misconduct early.
