When all else fails, you must use discipline. Failure to use discipline will undermine your attendance management policy and de-motivate other staff. This training activity introduces the use of disciplinary action as part of attendance management. It will enable participants to decide when it is appropriate and how to use it.

You begin this training activity with a brief introduction, the participants then work in groups to define disciplinary procedure. You review their ideas and summarise the key points of effective discipline. You explain how to manage long-term absence. The participants again work in groups to discuss a series of case studies. In a feedback session you ask them to present their solutions before providing model answers. Next, the participants try their skills in a practice exercise, acting out one of the case studies. Finally, you summarise the training activity, emphasising the key learning points.

Who is it for: This training resource is intended for use by trainers to help participants decide which situations need discipline and then on how to use it. Case studies and role-plays are included.
