Company doctors can be used to prevent absence and to reduce it if it does occur. This training activity explores the benefits of using a company doctor and looks at what they can and cannot do. It will help participants identify the situations in which to use a company doctor and how to use them.

You begin the training activity by introducing the topic and then ask participants to work in groups to discuss the benefits of company doctors. You then lead a plenary session to review their ideas and explain the options of using company doctors and the key benefits. Next, you explain the procedure for obtaining medical information and also the employee’s rights. The participants then work individually on a draft letter to an employee’s doctor. You review their suggestions and discuss a template letter. Finally, you summarise the training activity, bringing together all the key points.
