Getting the message out to suitable candidates that an organisation has a vacancy is not always as easy as it seems. Years ago, broadcasting the job via the local grapevine, or trawling amongst extended family members were the two main ways of filling vacancies. Nowadays, however, there are many different ways in which you can go about attracting potential candidates. Fortunately, it is possible to make an informed choice when looking at the range of selection methods available. The key to this choice is the realisation that each method has its own advantages and disadvantages – and it own costs in terms of money, time and effort. Selecting the best method for the available job is essential when trying to attract the quality and quantity of candidates you need. This training activity looks at the different ways in which it is possible to attract candidates. It also examines how these methods work, and the most suitable methods for particular types of job.
You start this training activity by explaining that there are many different ways to interest potential candidates in a job vacancy and then, to ensure you attract the right people for the job, you need to select the most appropriate method for that particular job. You then lead participants in a brainstorming activity in which they try to identify as many different methods of generating interest in a vacancy as possible. Any methods which they don’t mention are then introduced you using a list on the overhead projector. You then ask participants to take part in a group exercise which looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods identified. You follow this up with a review of their suggestions and the adding of any which they may not have covered. Next, you lead participants in a discussion of the most suitable methods of attracting candidates for a range of job roles, including those of managing director and secretary. Finally, you conclude the training activity with a review of the key learning points of the session.
