The self-aware team is able to recognise habitual patterns of behaviour that get in the way of its objectives. The openness required for teams to raise their EQ is difficult because it requires a different way of communicating. It necessitates honest dialogue about what’s working and what isn’t. It requires discussing some known un-discussables and bringing the hidden agendas to the surface. This training activity used the ‘reflecting’ team concept to enhance communication in the work team. In particular, it is a way of dealing with the un-discussable topics and hidden agendas that get in the way of authentic and emotionally intelligent communication.
You begin the training activity by introducing the participants to the concepts of un-discussables and hidden agendas. They then work individually to complete a questionnaire about honesty and openness in their team. Next, you give a brief input on communicating openly in teams. This is followed by a discussion exercise called, ‘The reflecting team’, that highlights the un-discussables and how the team can communicate more honestly.
