This is a compelling training activity, It explores in brief, ‘traditional’ leadership qualities, and then focuses on the four primary qualities, which underpin all truly effective leadership behaviour: Vision, Trust, Communication, and Self-improvement. Leadership is a skill and can be learned. The most effective way to change and to improve is through ‘action learning’. Coaching is an effective and efficient process by which managers can transform themselves into more effective leaders. The manager, who can coach others, as well as themselves, to develop and apply these primary qualities will become a truly effective leader.

You introduce the idea of leadership by looking briefly at well-known leadership figures – both in real life and fictional. The participants then work in small groups to identify the qualities that make an effective leader. Next, you introduce the four primary qualities, agree with their value, and explore them in detail within the group. The participants then carry out a one-to-one exercise – coaching their partners to produce a first action step to develop the quality or ability of their choice.
