This is a simple, enjoyable and very rewarding training activity to use at the ‘Options’ step in the coaching process. It introduces brainstorming – a term often misused in meetings where any ‘suggestion session’ is called brainstorming. Participants who use brainstorming now will notice one difference between this training activity and more traditional brainstorming sessions. The session focuses on the most basic form of brainstorming, ignoring the standard ‘rules’ of how to do it, and focusing instead on getting motivating results. At the ‘Options’ stage of the coaching process, where the purpose is to come up with things the performer could do, everything revolves around generating ideas. This training activity addresses that requirement
You set the scene by referring to the abilities of Leonardo da Vinci – an all round genius who ‘thought outside the box’. The participants then use their own innate creativity to brainstorm on a topic of their choice. This is used as an example to show them how creative they are. You then ask them to decide on a real problem, which they brainstorm to come up with ideas on potential solutions. After a brief discussion, they each take one of the potential solutions and repeat the brainstorming process. The exercise is reviewed and the training activity closed.
