First time leaders will have responsibility for leading a team. They will benefit from understanding some of the dynamics of team development, acquiring tools for analysing their own team’s development, and recognising that their own style and approach will need to adapt to the different stages of the process.

You provide a fairly detailed introduction to team development, ending with a look at appropriate leadership styles at various stages of team development. During this introduction, the participants have two opportunities to carry out some analysis of their current teams – looking first at a diagnosis of the team’s effectiveness and then at how the essential team contributions are being made.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to introduce participants to the main ideas of team development and to help them recognise their own role at the various stages of the process.

Purpose: This training activity provides an introduction to the underlying theory of team development, and is designed to follow ‘Leading the team’, which looks at group dynamics in action. It also links very well with ‘What kind of leader are you?’ and ‘What kind of leader can you be?’ where participants explore their own preferred leadership style and then work with the ideas of situation based leadership.
