The renowned motivational theorists Abraham Maslow and Frederick Herzberg identified the goal of personal growth and development as central to an individual’s motivation. Career progression not only provides the opportunity for personal growth, but can also satisfy status and security needs while at the same time providing an opportunity for self-actualisation.
You begin this training activity by encouraging participants to reflect on the current difficulties faced by those employers who have adopted a flat or lean structure in motivating their employees through career development. The responsibility for action of both the manager and the employee is discussed. The participants then embark on a number of short exercises which aim to get them to think about their past experience and identify what their major strengths are in relation to their working careers. At the end of this sequence, participants are encouraged to articulate their positive points in front of the whole group. After this, you introduce the work of the key motivational theorists Maslow and Herzberg as a prelude to having participants examine their own driving forces for satisfaction at work. These are captured when they write their own ‘ideal job specification’, and short- and long-term career goals. The final exercise involves participants working in syndicate groups to identify an action plan of what steps they can take to achieve these goals. You encourage the participants to share their ideas in a plenary review, enabling any fine-tuning of the action plans that the participants will use after the training event.
