What causes this to happen?

You begin this training activity with a brief introduction then the participants learn about the cause and effect analysis technique by applying it to a problem facing the team. You take them through the process step by step, explaining the concepts as a diagram develops. After the creative thought, the participants then apply logical thought processes to focus on the factors which appear to be the root causes. Finally, participants reinforce their learning by using the techniques on another real issue followed by a review of the session in a plenary discussion.

Purpose: Rarely do problems have a single cause – there are often many contributory factors, some of which are easier to recognise than others. This training resource is intended for use by trainers to show how cause and effect analysis will help participants to search for possible root causes of a problem or situation which exists now. Cause and effect analysis will also help them to look into the future, and identify the various factors which will contribute towards the success of a project.
