Making the most of your coaching session

The actual coaching interview is normally productive and straightforward, particularly if both parties have prepared conscientiously in order to make the most of the interview time. However, difficulties can arise during the coaching interview. Sometimes these are due to deficiencies with the coach, for example, over-directive coaching, perhaps resulting from unbridled enthusiasm. Sometimes they will arise when the coachee has to be on the receiving end of a ‘tough’ coaching session where mistakes or other issues are addressed. It is important that the coachee is helped to address difficulties diplomatically and maturely, without damaging the relationship with the coach. This training activity examines both these difficult situations and, using role plays, allows participants to practise dealing with them.

You open the training activity by explaining that the vast majority of coaching sessions are straightforward and productive. You go on to say that difficulties do sometimes arise and introduce two of the most common from the perspective of the coachee: the over directive coach and the tough coaching session (where coachee mistakes or other tough issues are addressed). You discuss both these topics briefly before moving on to examine one or both (the timings and material easily allow for this) in greater detail, eliciting ideas and inviting analysis from the participants. Throughout the training activity you emphasise the importance of the coachee accepting responsibility for the coach/coachee relationship and bearing this in mind as they address difficult issues. You follow the detailed work on each difficult area with a role play, giving the participants the opportunity to put what they have discussed into practice. Each role play is followed by feedback and discussion. You close the training activity by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout.
