Coaching is a vital tool in the performance manager’s kitbag: in order to achieve high performance, staff will need to be coached. However, there is confusion about what coaching is and some anxiety that coaching needs specialist skills and knowledge. This training activity clarifies what coaching is and helps participants to recognise that they have the skills that are needed although they may need to consider using them differently.
The training activity starts with your introduction, followed by the development of a definition of coaching. Participants then consider when it is appropriate to use coaching. The training activity continues as participants identify a process for coaching and the essential features of a learning climate in the workplace. Next you introduce the exercise; participants individually develop a coaching plan for a member of staff who has an identified learning need that can be appropriately met through coaching. Participants then pair up, to clarify and make specific their plans and review their learning about coaching. The training activity ends with participant’s feedback on their learning and your emphasis on the value of coaching and the importance of a learning climate.
