Many organisations that have introduced formal feedback, supervision, appraisal systems, and so on, have begun to recognise that these means of managing performance have their limitations. If managers do not go on to identify opportunities for coaching their staff towards improved performance, they may be in danger of losing all the ground they have just gained. This activity is, therefore, about exploring what coaching is, the skills required to do it and how competencies can help in this process.
The activity begins with the participants exploring the characteristics and benefits of coaching and the skills and behaviours of a good coach, in general terms and with reference to the generic competency framework components of leadership and management and development of staff. Using the competency framework supplied with this activity, the participants examine how competencies can assist in coaching and self-assessing their performance. You describe a model of coaching which the participants then follow in a role-play, taking account of the skills and behaviours of the competencies. The activity closes with a final feedback discussion of their experience in coaching in the role-play and how using competencies in coaching will translate into reality.
