The purpose of coaching is always to raise performance in some way. For example, coaching may be given to make improvements in a particular area, such as deal with conflict, or it may take the form of preparing a coachee for the next state in their career, supporting a team member as they get to grips with a new role or generating a positive attitude towards the coachee’s role or task. A proactive and participative coachee will inevitably gain far more benefit from the coaching process than one who is less involved. A coachee who works consciously to contribute to the coaching session is not only contributing towards their own development and success but is also helping to ensure that the time spent in actual coaching sessions is more effective, maximising organisational resources. This training activity examines the benefits of coaching and encourages participants to take a proactive role before, during and after their coaching sessions.
You begin the training activity by introducing the role of the coachee in the coaching process and, after eliciting ideas from the participants, define the term coaching. The participants identify situations where they would benefit from coaching. Working in pairs, they then generate ways of contributing actively to the coaching process from the perspective of the coachee. Next, they work individually on one contribution method, coming up with practical ways of adding value and with guidance given to help them think beyond the obvious. The participants then work on the coachee preparation checklist, customising generic points to ensure that they apply to their individual coaching situations. They also complete a sample page of the coaching progress report. You close the training activity by taking key learning points from the participants before distributing a key learning points handout.
