This activity provides an effective solution to the challenge of poor performance. It is useful for managers who have staff who are not motivated for some reason, and also for team members who like to solve their own performance problems but who sometimes aren’t sure where to begin. It introduces participants to ten specific questions, the answers to which indicate the seat of the problem. Once this is discovered a way forward can be found through coaching. The ten questions can also be used as a checklist for how well all the bases have been covered in a future project, new area of responsibility or new work practice.
You begin the training activity by asking the group for examples of poor performance. Working in small groups, the participants then produce lists of reasons for poor performance, finding a reason to fit each example. Next, you introduce the ten questions of performance, which the group compare with their own lists. The participants then work in pairs, coaching their partners, using the ten questions to identify the appropriate entry point for coaching. Finally, you review the training activity and take feedback on the value of this form of coaching, and their intention to use it in the workplace.
