Commitment at work is about aligning hopes, aims and efforts with the plans and objectives of the organisation. Company products and services are sold in competition with others providers. The rapid commercialisation of many developing countries, coupled with vastly improved communication, has increased the market; it has also increased the competition. Organisations that both anticipate and react with speed and efficiency prosper. To be effective in this way they need employees who are team-players: people who can operate flexibly and competently; people who act for themselves, each other, the boss and the organisation, and make no distinction between the aims of all. Going it alone and ‘ploughing your own furrow’ is not a satisfactory long-term option. In the short term, 100% investment in oneself might give greater personal knowledge and skill gains. But if enough people went their own way, organisations would be poorer entities. The end-result of this would be fewer organisations and, hence, fewer job opportunities. Commitment is a matter of attitude and behaviour. It’s about feeling the job is important; practising personal responsibility; being self-starting and energetic; and seeing tasks through to a satisfactory conclusion. A boss’s role is to create and maintain a working environment where all this is encouraged and rewarded. But the prime responsibility rests with each individual.
You begin this training activity with a brief introduction to the topic of committing yourself. You ask participants to work in groups considering how to encourage commitment, and then each group reports back. After the feedback discussion, you ask participants to rejoin their groups and to identify priority areas for action. This is followed by another feedback session. You then conduct a concluding round-up session.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for us by trainers to help participants understand that what is good for the organisation is also good for them.
