However good their time-management skills may be, most team leaders are very busy people with many demands on their time. One of the most valuable skills a new team leader can learn is to concentrate on the things which really need saying – and say them briefly but effectively. This activity sets out the essentials of objective setting and feedback and shows them in action.
You discuss with the group the problem of trying to manage the team when you have your hands full getting the task done. Then you introduce them to the idea of the leadership arrows – three quick and highly-focused ideas which allow them to manage the team. Finally, you ask them to carry out a series of role-plays to demonstrate the three ideas and provide opportunities for practising feedback skills, both for participants and observers.
Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers to present participants with a framework for essential communications, convincing them that by concentrating on these essentials they can manage a team as well as carrying out a hands-on role.
