This competencies training activity begins with participants reviewing good practice in identifying and advertising a job vacancy. It takes them through the whole recruitment process, showing how competencies can bring benefits at every stage, and demonstrates how competencies they can be used to the advantage of applicants and the organisation.

You begin the training activity by asking participants to comment on a typical (but largely negative) approach to filling a vacancy, and then go on to describe the recruitment process. In groups, the participants work through four stages of the recruitment process, finding out along the way how competencies can benefit this process. They arrive at the final stage of the process, drafting an advertisement for the vacancy. They then go on to look at how a suitability criteria matrix may help them fill a vacancy, and match candidates to a job description and a person specification. In an optional training exercise, particiapants look at the advantages of using a competencies approach to recruitment from the applicant's and the organisation's point of view.

Who is it for: This training activity is intended for use by trainers with managers to introduce them to the concept of using competencies in recruitment selection.

The participants can be managers within a discrete organisation or from separate organisations. Twelve participants is the ideal number for this training activity.
