In the past 20 years or so many organisations have developed and introduced appraisal processes. Typically, these feature a retrospective appraisal of performance, including achievements and concerns, setting objectives for a future agreed period and the identification of training and development needs. Latterly, competencies and competency frameworks have also been introduced and the two approaches have often become complementary. Where appraisal seeks to motivate staff members, competencies can help the manager and staff member to identify appropriate behaviours, new levels to aspire to, necessary changes in behaviour and training and development opportunities.
The activity opens with the participants considering key questions relating to appraisal. They go on to look at two case studies that examine how a competency framework can improve appraisal for the staff member and manager by making the feedback behaviourally based, descriptive and specific. The participants next identify the benefits of a competency-based appraisal process, what they must take into consideration when planning to implement such a process and how to monitor and review the results. The activity closes with a review of the key learning points about appraisal, the benefits of competencies in appraisal, and the implementing and monitoring of competency-based appraisal.
